in group one patient replaces another.

it’s really hard to see someone you love backslide. and sometimes it’s really difficult to remember that there are so many more sides to someone than their illness.

witnessing the cycle of people coming and going in a treatment, the weight of loving someone who struggles — if God is not there, then where would God be?

I believe God is there — in the empty seats in between, in the counselors who help, in the patience offered, in the moments of hope and clarity and connection. God is in the persistence of love, even when it’s tested.

this week, I returned to the memory center where I help out — the first time this year. on Tuesday, I’ll step back into my job at the donut shop. these might seem like small things, just another week passing, but for me, they are big things. each step forward carries the weight of all the moments I wasn’t sure I could take it.

I also started making music again. that’s how I make sense of everything. when my mind feels tangled, when emotions swell beyond words, music gives them form. it’s a way to move through the heaviness instead of being trapped by it. my songs are a place to set things down, so I don’t have to carry them alone.

God is there, too — in the routine of work, in the quiet presence of the memory center, in the weight of each step forward.

God is in the music, in the space between the notes, in the act of turning struggle into sound. God is in the letting go, in the moment a song carries something heavy away.

and God is in the movement itself — the willingness to step forward, to create, to keep going even when it feels impossible.

And yes, God is there in all the steps of the way; with you and for you – ultimately, within you! Thank you for this post, my friend; knowing that you are on the way means a lot to me! Appreciate you and your light! Sending you lots of light, blessings, and love; have a peaceful day 🙏 🌟 🌈 💖🍀🌻

  5. Love the way you have written this cookie. That saying regarding the journey starting with one single step is akin to your phrase ‘small things’. But in your speaking of the shop, the group, the memory clinic and your awaiting songs, those four small things hold a wealth of treasures. All awaiting new journeys to tread. New experiences and the fact that you yourself are a part of it is a Godsend. There is a positivity in all these four too. The smell of donuts is pretty awesome. I should imagine that everyone walks through the shop door with a huge smile on their face. Anticipation. Anticipation of small things. Look forward to these new song ideas. That will be awesome. All the best cookie. 💫

      1. It’s easy to believe in someone who expresses, by showing in the words they write, that soulfully, they actually truly deep down believe in themselves. And when they believe in others too…that’s kind of a ‘double whammy special’ isn’t it. I bet the guys and gals in the memory clinic will be overjoyed to see you and your guitar again. Music, specifically, resonates with such conditions. Your tunes will shine over them like sun beams after a storm by involving the favourite musical memories you created cookie. I remember playing the song ‘Catch a falling star’ to the Day Hospital memory clinic group I visited and sang songs for about four times a year. It became a firm specific favourite every time I played it over the months and years. One song can change the whole holistic community vibe. Sometimes had to play it twice by request. Memory loss? Not with a well placed melody or three. And individuals have their own specific favourites too. Others get a thrill seeing their group/peer members/friends responding happily to a song you yourself give them individually. Camaraderie is found deep in the friendship vibes in each of us collectively. Small things? They are as big as a heart like yours can deliver. Cheers cookie. All the best.

  11. I truly believe music is one of the best gifts we humans possess. Without the arts and music, I’m not sure I’d find life much worth living.
