rain (finally) and blustery winds arrive early Thursday morning in Brooklyn. then we get something called wraparound rain, potentially wet snowflakes and blustery winds into Friday, as a cold blast of air rushes in.

that small space between fall and winter often feels like a pauseโ€”nature holds its breath before the cold fully settles in.

this poem by Jane Hirshfield beautifully captures the poignant, fleeting transition between fall and winter:

Autumn

Again the wind
flakes gold-leaf from the trees
and the painting darkensโ€”
as if a thousand penitents
kissed an icon
till it thinned
back to bare wood,
without diminishment.

fall gives way to winter, yet something enduring remains.

that’s all I wanted to say. plus here’s a new song by me, called winterrzzz.

We got our first taste of snow this evening, starting around 4:30 p.m., mixed with rain ๐ŸŒง๏ธโ„๏ธ. Hopefully, it wonโ€™t stickโ€”ugh! ๐Ÿ˜ฉ Winter is comingโ€ฆ sigh ๐Ÿ˜ญ.

The poem is beautiful ๐Ÿ’–, and I listened to the song you shared ๐ŸŽถ. I love it, it has that indie vibe, which is one of my favorite genres ๐ŸŽงโœจ.

  2. I love the way you have expressed and word captured the whole vibe of your current experiences. The poetic way you yourself describe for this moment in time and the awaiting of expected seasonal change. And the inclusion of Jane Hirshfieldโ€™s poem. Janeโ€™s poem sits very comfortably within your own words cookie.

Loved the song and certainly that whisper spoken opening was a really nice touch. It echoes the hushed waiting moment for change before winter sets in. The guitar picked notes, consistently playing like a ticking clock alongside, were so right with the strong melody and lyrics. And your lyrics can certainly hold their head up to be equal to, and sit alongside, Janeโ€™s poem. You have given us a fantastic synergy of words, poetry, lyrics and melody here cookie. Nice one. All the best.

      1. I suppose itโ€™s how we interpret songs, because we write songs. The full story is in every part of a songโ€™s dynamic isnโ€™t it. The whole ambience of a song has been considered deeply and holistically when we write it. Shep, (Harmonica Riff Raff) the harp player I follow, linked a recent song in a blog by the late Jim Keays off his Caledonian album. โ€˜Waiting for the Big Oneโ€™ was Shepโ€™s link. But on listening to the whole album, โ€˜Fools Goldโ€™ stood out as sublime. Both songs really deeply thought out. Cheers cookie.

  3. Life itself remains regardless of how challenging the circumstances may get. Life always finds a way. That’s how it thrives and evolves on our planet for millions of years! Not to forget: we are life! Loved the poem, Cookie! It pictures well this transition of seasons. We had our second snowfall here in Sofia, and as cold makes itself comfortable all around, I hold on to the idea that life remains… (I am not a big fan of cold!). Thank you for your beautiful post and song! Lots of light, love, and blessings to you, my friend!

  10. Liked the Hirshfield poem and your fine song struck me as Nico-esque, which musically is a fine thing.

From listening to your music I often think I have to try something with a whispery vocal–but my voice doesn’t take direction well from me, the composer and arranger — it seems it never wants to obey me.

    1. I admire Nico very much, thank you. the way I see it, you can do musically what Iโ€™m not meant to, and itโ€™s a good thing we all make something different.
