this is a new song called laundromatic. the tactile nature of going there, the act of washing and cleansing, the feeling of warm clothes and the smell of fresh laundry, I find comforting and soothing.

and transforming, particularly on the days that I am low: the city on hard days. riding my bike past so-called recreation shops where they sell mystery products with chems in them. sitting in the health center waiting room (it’s a good place but it can be scary).

one place I feel safe strangely is the laundromat. being away from immediate threats, simply feeling safe, is enough.

in group we talk about the importance of committing to rituals. this can include ceremonies and spiritual teachings, or not. a ritual can be as simple as running at a certain hour of the day in your favorite band t-shirt, baking bread on Saturday morning, or sipping tea while watching the sunrise. whatever moves you towards a better kind of mental or emotional state. we perform this ritual at the beginning of group where we lock arms and repeat a secret phrase together. we do it to bring our emotional states in alignment, and it works.

part of the reason for having a personal ritual is to make a safe place for the things we feel, good things and dark things, so that we don’t have to carry all of those feelings around with us everywhere. my songs are my special safe place. I guess doing laundry is a cleansing ritual.

Einstein said everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control. “determined for the insect as well as the star,” he wrote. “we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper.”

maybe there is a pattern, a ritual of life. I don’t know. God knows. I can’t go and ask God. but, God knows.

if it is all simply unpredictable noise after all, then I pray God gives me the humility to accept the chaos. and lets me keep going to the laundromat.

  2. I feel that, the part about safe-spaces. It’s like that for me when I write fiction.

      1. Yeah, I guess so. 🙂 I literally don’t have friends, only family. In real life I’ve faced a lot of non-support, and here I’m like wow, wait. Someone read something I wrote and liked it. Wait, what? LOL

  4. I sure appreciate you and your writing, cookie. Your sharing in the way that you do, poetically, musically, and from the heart. Instantly transported to your scenes, including the scents. The everyday routines/rituals help me to feel grounded and I think that allows more space for creativity and focused productivity. A little spontaneity is good too! 😊 Take care. 🌼

    1. the ritual I didn’t talk about is following you and so many other talented, kind, caring people. I have come to love people here whom I have never met, and along the way myself a little more, too.

  5. Your posts have always been great reflective, honest and everyday observational studies of your world cookie. With the added bonus of related songs and linking lyrics. This laundromat insight writing here shows a holistic artist growing more and more in confidence. The talent has always been evident. And….as with all artists who take on special themes/reflections/expressing themselves/life’s hullabaloo and the artistic choices/means of how to express them…..the settling nature that ongoing time allows means it gets better and better. I always feel inspired and always get confidence in how the former and latter Beatles songwriting abilities changed over time.

Thank you for your insights into rituals too. Order amongst the chaos is very apt. And yes, I do have my safe places too. The Den and The Dunes. And the VeeDub. Your laundromat? Bet you wrote a song or two to the different rhythmic spinning cycles. My washing machine keeps singing ‘Jeremy, Jeremy, Jeremy, ….’ on the wash part. True! It’s fantastic that we are gifted the bonus of hearing some form of music in the normality of the everyday activities of life it seems.

Love your voice here. Those low notes are sublime. The icing on the vocal delivery cake.

    Cheers cookie.

    1. I tried to reply a few times and I don’t know why, but WP wouldn’t let me. what I tried to say: I don’t find the song right away, mostly I hear things and experience and notice things and feel certain things, and this stuff follows me around, and when I sit on the floor of my room to write I have this library of images and thoughts to pull from. this is how I mostly work. I will never find the words to tell you what it means to me that you have noticed me.

      1. Jetpack is a law unto itself at times. It is a spam problem with my site where hundreds are finding their way into the spam folder and need repetitive deleting!

I find the same when song writing. ‘Inspiration in given moments’ is a good descriptor. It is amazing we can forget the struggle of playing to learn the guitars now. I am certainly happy that my limitations can produce a sound that gives some way of expressing my songs at least. But sometimes, as with the recent home recordings, subliminal works too. And still a fair old ongoing learning journey to undertake.

Experimenting and learning technical stuff and a neural pathway fizzing brings you a tune or idea whilst you are on the hoof getting to grips with these computer systems. Weird! Noticing your music? It was a ‘drop in’ situation of pure good luck. I heard one of your songs and thought ‘Ooh! That’s a bit special’. So looked further.

It happens on my YouTube searches too. A hidden gem pops up and it’s great to hit the subscribe button. And of course, the wonder of WordPress allows really nice building blocks of understanding the holistic picture behind the songs. People’s stories. And of course, you really appreciate the people and community that keep in touch. Especially the journey of fellow musical artists. Yeh! It is all really very interesting how we garner friendships through WP. Priceless.

Cheers and all the best cookie.

  7. reality and real…that’s what comes to mind when I read what you share…where as some of us hide behind words and between lines.

“part of the reason for having a personal ritual is to make a safe place for the things..” relatable but seen in a different light after reading this.
thank you, Cookie …for your music and words.🤍💫
