stand on any sweltering street corner of Brooklyn in July and something becomes really clear:

people are edgy.

maybe it’s the steam that rises from subway grates. or maybe the smell of black trash bags baking in the summer sun. if you study their faces, no one appears to be in a good mood.

sometimes our moods are handed to us. like when the morning news is hopeful, or someone says they like our sneakers. that’s when a good mood feels like a gift.

but there’s also a lot we can do to improve our mood. the stuff we stream, what we eat, our daily rituals, the people we hang out with – it’s all a choice.

and so maybe we can get better at it.

I was knocked out by COVID the past two weeks. I have had it four times now. the research shows that substance use and SUD are associated with an increased risk for developing it and can lead to worse health outcomes, like lung, heart and brain complications. I was checked out and seem to be okay.

but because I was sick I couldn’t go to group, or the memory center, or work, or play music or do much of anything else that keeps me together, and that was the hardest thing. all I felt the past two weeks was lonely, and anxious, and depressed. all of these things increase risk of substance abuse.

today is my first day back and moving around in the world. if I accomplish anything good today, it’s going to be helping myself change the way I see it. I’m going to work hard at getting myself in the mood to do the things I already know how to do that keep me going.

I live in a rural area and it can be like that here too. 🤷 Nice to see you again, BTW.

  2. You are absolutely right, Cookie. The things we engage with have huge impact on our state. Be it people, situations, TV, or social media; all is molding our mood. Still, It’s up to us to be selective and cautious about it, and be wise enough to choose the good, the positive, the inspiring, and uplifting, and surely we will have a better daily experience. I am glad you are ok and back to your routines. You are strong! Sending you lots of light and blessings, my friend 🙏💫🍀💖

  3. I’m so sorry you got sick with Covid and the frustration that brings with not being able to do what you enjoy.
There is something about someone commenting on our shoes!
It’s so true. We have the choice to create habits that put us in a good mood at the start of the day (and at the end too).
    Happy to see you back!!

  8. Covid is relentless it would seem. My past nursing days, with continuation of sent emails from new research, still allows me to keep up to date. Triggers are evident from the simplicity of a getting the cold or flu virus for example. There are many other triggers. Love that you have written in this insightful poetical style here to address your outlook on life, and its impacts, to find answers to overcoming symptoms. Providing you with more positivity to taking on each day. Yes, I had Covid really badly too a couple of years back. And still suffer acute or elongated aches and pains. Extreme lethargy and tiredness. Basically times of feeling drained. So can emphasise with your own experiences cookie. I’m currently looking deeply at, and adopting the values of, good nutritional choices. Over the past month, stopping certain foods that can give similar side effects and symptoms. It’s good to see you are keeping us up to date and thereby getting fantastic, uplifting responses from your followers. Or best description….friends. I haven’t been blogging either. Still hunkering over the music and songwriting. Albeit slowly. All the best cookie. It’s great you are on the mend and continuing your role as an amazing fighter. Inspirational.

      1. Friends, from whatever the source, are an essential inclusion in life aren’t they. You have people in your comments that show good vibes, exchanges and so…a nice welcome friendship. Also, from your blog stories, in your social sphere too.

Music? I am in a current mood to get these songs down. Working on setting up two of the guitars to keep them in tune. A new neck nut and complete set up for the SG. Also. Awaiting a specific Les Paul ‘tune-o-matic’ bridge to arrive on Wednesday. Arriving from the USA I believe. The metal one on the Hohner is splitting, at its limits and won’t hold tune. Or create decent intonation. Also bought a guitar setting up book. An idiots guide. 😊 Once done, I can then play the much intended electric guitar inclusions on the songs! Hope you are now well enough to get at some inspirational tunes too. Cheers cookie.
