if you’re ever in nyc, look down. hiding between sidewalk cracks and under train tracks, you might find one of the people who inhabit joe’s cool, miniature world.

joe is joe iurato, a street and commercial artist, and he’s amazing.

he has painted on large, outdoor walls for a long time. he also makes small, spray painted wood cutouts of people and photographs them in public places throughout the city.

when I found joe’s art near where I live, it was like opening a pop-up book of my life. instantly it felt like someone was showing me what I look like, even how my music looks. I learned joe and I like a lot of the same stuff, like graff and skateboarding. it was weird.

his art makes me happy when I don’t feel so good about things. when I see the little people in the tar banks behind a local supermarket, spray painting, riding a board down a flight of stairs, hanging out in a parking lot or a drainage ditch, or scaling walls to escape, it reminds me: I may be small, maybe I’m just a bug fighting for life on the sidewalk, but I have a life all my own to live how I want, and there’s this universe of songs inside of me that’s big.

when I asked joe if I could include his art on my bandcamp page, he was super cool about it.

I wanted to share his incredible stuff with you. o, and a new song, called stingray. no matter how much bad stuff happens in a day, my bike always makes it better.

  2. “a pop-up book of my life” – how wonderful is that! Would be a delightful phrase figuratively but knowing it is true makes it more appealing. Thank you for introducing Joe Iurato with us, and for sharing a link. A lovely song share, as you do. My bike makes it better too, kindred cookie. šŸ˜ŠšŸŽ¶

    1. all the neighborhoods change, some a lot, some a little, but riding a bike, this one thing and maybe just a few others, like a sunrise, will be a part of the blocks forever. x
