I never know when or how a song is going to end. I do know it has a way of bending. the end of the beginning bends to the beginning of the end.

it’s something that eludes formula and analysis.

I can’t tell you how many times I have sung “loss,” and how often it was “love” that was hiding unconsciously in my heart. how many times I thought I was at the end, only to find another beginning.

so I never know … and I don’t need to worry about knowing. as long as I’m curious, and I wonder, I know all that I need to know.

  1. In Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott writes that Writers must be open to the twists and turns their stories take, even if those twists and turns result in an entirely different story than the one they originally planned to write.
Because when a writer starts with a small focus and then widens it gradually, the story comes together— “bird by bird.”
