Nasser Candy is a bodega on Church Avenue in Brooklyn. everyone there speaks corner store English. it’s just a chill place. I have been there, like, a hundred times.

one day it hit different. or maybe it was exactly the same, but I was different. I’m not sure what happened. but I was going to make a song and put Nasser in it.

I brought a feeling back to my room, sat on the floor, picked up my no 2 pencil, and got to work. I didn’t know where the song wanted to to go. I never really do. a song never just happens. it calls to me with its demands, and they’re usually big.

making a song is not exactly waiting tables, demolition work, or making bills and passing laws. but it’s labor enough. it’s the one thing I do that I really love. I wrote this, pressed the red button on Voice Memos, and so here it is. buzz, nearby truck, and all.

  1. This is such a beautiful song. It makes me want to travel again.
You’re right that writing songs is labour in itself – and one that helps people channel their emotions and feel things they need to feel.
